SLY GROG SELLING.

THE MAXIMUM PENALTY.

: (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 22. At the Police Court Jean Cartca, proprietress of “The Mansions,” one of the largest boardinghouses in Auckland, was charged on two informations with selling liquor without a license. It was admitted that .the boarders were supplied with liquor by Mrs Carter, for which they paid cash. Two constables were so supplied. This was followed by a police raid, when 195 bottles of beer and stout, and a quantity of wine were ftmud on the premises. It waa admitted thajt the proprietress was a respectable woman, and that the house was well conducted. It was pleaded that there were none of the usual elements of sly grog-selling, but Mr Cutten, S.M., held that there had been a very palpable breach of the law, and he imposed the maximum penalty of £SO on one charge, and dismissed the second charge. He ordered the liquor Seized to be destroyed.
