FROZEN MEAT TRADE.

AUSTRALIAN MEAT FOR SWITZERLANO. Press Association. —Telegraph.-Copyright. Sydney, March 21. The first parcel of. frozen mutton from ' Australia to Switzerland is being shipped by the steamer Essex, the Swiss' authorities having given permission for its importation. The shipment consists of 500 specially selected carcases, which will be sent via London and Antwerp by the Colonial Meat Export Co. Mr Hughes, managing director of the company, is urging the importance - of opening new markets, as a single market is easily oyer supplied, thus making', it easy to manipulate prices below a,profitable shipping level. Deferring to .the present low - prices in London, Mr Hughes suggested that they were .possibly due to Home distributors anticipating early large supplies of Australian meat as a result of the good season, but more likely the depression- was, due to methods adopted by Americans, who captured 70 per cent, of the Argentine trade, their motto being “First spoil the market at the consuming centre,, then the consumer' aud producer will be at your mercy.”

PROBABLE SHORTAGE OF BEEF AND MUTTON.

(Per United Press Association). ‘ ' AUCKLAND, March 21

in Auckland, as elsewhere, there shenis to be ah indication, of, a ; coming shortage' in beef and mutton supplies. Oh inquiries being made to-day, it was ascertained that for freezing purposes the prospects; are that this season’s output will fall short of last year’s by a considerable 'margin', ow. ing, .ho dbubt, to the fact that last season the beef market was overstocked. There has, in .many, districts, been a wholesale slaughter of young calves. The dry weather in Auckland during-the' summer i s also considered to have had some effect on the mutton trade, and supplies for freezing purposes are beginning to shorten. The- fact that so much new land is heiug settled on in the Auckland province also accounts to a certain extent for the absorption of a large number of sheep which might have otherwise' been frozen for export.
