AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC

V , ‘ HAYWARD’S PICTURES. LYCEUM THEATRE. CHANGE OF PROGRAMME TO-NIGHT. This evening the management will screen another All West programme, which they guarantee to equal any programme presented at the Lyceum. The American Biograph and itagraph Companies are well represented by “The Two Litttle Waifs” (a fairy story), “Love and the Law,” and “Jean and the Calico Doll.” The scenic films include “Ostrich Breeding,” “African Industries,” and “The Silk Worm Industry.” ' The “Museum of Sovereigns” will interest everyone,-while Palthe's Gazette is said to contain all the latest news. The comedy films include that favourite with' Lyceum audiences. Max Linder, who appears in a picture entitled “The Puzzle,” •‘Marguerite’s Birthday” (a fine study), while ‘.‘A Flat to Lei is said to be highly mirth-provoking. To-morrow evening the management will give a benefit performance in aid of the Wanganui Beautifying .Society.

. OPERA.HOUSE. BELLE CEOME COMPANY. Wft have witnessed many entertainments bad, and indifferent—and have no hesitation in classing the Belle Crome musical and’vaudeville combination among the very best. They are artists -to an individual, and the , audience which assembled at the Opera House last evening was quint to recognise this. The fact that every .item was encored was a compliment to* the management’s selection —a coraplinjent that was thoroughly merited, for there was not •’ a dull moment throughout the .whole performance. Perhaps the most popular items from a musical point o? view were the hand-bell selections of wellknown airs, a treble encore being recorded in each instance. The. quality of the music of the company produced from their bells was a revelation, the tone being simply exquisite. Mr Will Hughes must be ranked ( among the. most capable ‘ comeSians it has yet been oiir lot to laugh at. He would cheer even the most confirmed pessimist, while the average man just held his sides and laughed till he could-laugh no more. Each of his items elicited double encores. Miss Belle Crome’s charm- and vivacity -quickly installed her as' a favourite. ■ She was equally at home with 'the violin', and.'sleigh-bells," while her mandoline duet with Harry Fane pleased the audience immensely. ’ Miss Ethel Richards, who is the possessor of a splendid soprano voice of great range and power, was - heard to advantage in . her operatic numbers, while her duets with Mr J. Llewellyau were equally popular, and the encores accorded each were very hearty. The programme was brought to a conclusion by the juggling and balancing turn of the Arnold Brothers. This item, apart from its merit as an exhibition of skill, introduced some screaming comicalities. Mr W. Ernst Crome officiated at the piano, and his sympathetic and-artistic rendering of the accompaniments was the subject of a great deal of favourable comment. Mr Crome, who is also an organist of note, will be well remembered as formerly a prominent member of the famous Lynch Bellringers. Mr Crome’s playing to-day is even better than when he last visited’ Wanganui, over 20 years ago. TO-NIGHT. The ' management promise a complete change of programme to-night, and a packed house should result. The company’s performance last night was their best advertisement, and those who are uot present this evening will miss an entertainment that we can heartily recommend 1 . To-morrow (Thursday) evening the Cromes will appear at Patca.

ARAMOHO WESLEYAN ANNIVERSARY The concert in connection with the Aramoho Wesleyan Church anniversary waa held last evening in the schoolroom. Mr F. Whitlock, secertary of the Trust, read a satisfactory annual report, and an excellent programme was rendered, the choir being* pressed on all sides to repeat the service of song, “The Californian Nugget.” PRIMITIVE METHODIST ANNIVERSARY. The annual meeting in connection with the Primitive Methodist anniversary was held last evening. The secretary’s report was of a highly satisfactory nature. Mr J Jones delivered an instructive address, and an interesting programme was roo dered.

Members are reminded tbat the annual meeting of the Wanganui Ladies’ Golf Club will he held to-morrow afternoon at Christ Church Schoolroom, at 2.30 o’clock.
