An Intolerable Nuisance.
TO THE EDITOR, „ Sir, —As a visitor to Wanganui, I wish to express ray emphatic indignation that a so-called up-to-date town (some call it a “city”) like Wanganui should be so laxly governed in regard to droving as appears to be the case during my short visit in this Mecca of New Zealand. I was advised to take lodgings near the bridge, where so many fine accommodation houses are situated. . My quarters were everything that could be desired, but the intolerable annoyance at all hours of these moonlight nights, caused by the incessant barking of dogs and the yellings of drivers, driving stock oyer the bridge and through the town, is beyond a joke, and shows the municipal government of “ihoder’ Wanganui has at least one serious flaw, and in this particular case is far behind back blocks government. At 2 o’clock one morning last week I was awakened by these noises, which continued, on and off, till after daylight, and every morning since (excepting Sunday) similar “doses” have been administered. This (Monday) morning, before 4 o’clock, the nuisance was again experienced by myself and co-visitors, hud we got no more sleep. Truly, yon hotelkeepers and boarding-housekeepers are a submissive lot, to-tolerate such a business-ruining state of things to continue. I shall certainly pick another locality on my next visit. My nights have been nothing more nor less than a nightmare. God help the sick who live within half a. mile of the drivers and their dogs.—l am, etc,, VISITOR. Monday, March 20.
