✓ ' TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Numerous inquiries have, been made concerning tlic City Band’s decision not to compete at the forthcoming contest at Palmerston next . month. . No doubt it has caused a great deal of disappointment to those directly interested in the band’s welfare, but it was felt under the preserft circumstances that there was no alternative, as wc came to the conclusion that wc could not have done justice to ourselves under different arrangements that would have to be made so near the contest, hence the decision. I am sure that the public generally will agree with us, looking at it from a business aspect. 1 do not suppose that anyone is more disappointed .than the members themselves, ;bul the 'intention; is tb settle down and prepare ■ for' the : next ■ contest. To' those wlip have go' uiifjcifislily laboured .to help the,’ band in their appeal for funds on behalf of the members .1 wish to return tbetr-sincere .thanks. I would also like to mention' that all moneys collected, will .be, as far as. .possible, .put aside, for The..express purpose of sending the band to the 1912 contest, which in all probability will take place .at, Gisborne. . The amount. required to send the band to that town will .be .Considerably in excess of the suiu that would have been' needed to send’the band' to Palmerston. With the above object iu„ view, the baud are most anxious to settle* down to twelve months’, hard training, and as there are two' or three vacancies, the committee would be pleased to meet any enthusiast who is desirous of entering ■into baud work.
