POWELKA

ON TRIAL AT PALMERSTON. (Per United Press Association.! PALMERSTON N., April 29. Powelka arrived at Palmerston North at mid-dav to-day from Wellington. There was a large crowd to meet him and another equally large one at the Courthouse. The accused, when he alighted from the train, was handcuffed between two policemen and was closely attended by a warder and other members of the police force. As lie walked along the platform one of the crowd called out, “You’re a hero, Powelka,” a remark the accused acknowledged with a smile.

Powelka appeared before the Court at noon on a charge of breaking and entering a butcher’s shop at Terrace End in July last and taking a steel valued at 10s 6d. ‘ Other charges will follow.

FIRST CHARGE DISMISSED. Further Charges. The case was dismissed on the grounds that the period between the date of the theft, in July. 1909, and February, 1910, when the goods were found in Powelka’s possession, was too long to require the accused to account for it. The accused is now before the Court on a charge of breaking and entering and theft from the premises of Miss MacKiiy, dressmaker. He will also be charged with committing arson on the same premises.
