FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

FIREMAN KILLED AT FOROELL. A shocking accident occurred in tho Fordcll railway yards last night, when a fireman named Michael McGrath was so severely injured that ho died shortly afterwards. The deceased was firing on the train which arrived at Fordcll at 7.45 p.m., and while shunting in the yard, had occasion to leave tho engine, and apply tho < brake to a couple of trucks. It is surmised that he must have slipped while jumping on the brake between the trucks, with the result that one vehicle passed completely over him. The unfortunate man was frightfully injured about his arms and legs, and was much weakened by the consequent loss of blood. First aid was rendered by Guard Whitcombe, and .McGrath was brought into town without delay. Dr. Reid was in attendance, and had the sufferer, who was quite conscious, removed immediately to the hospital. After being admitted, McGrath became unconscious, and his injuries and the shock finally overpowered him, and ho died in two hours’ time.

The deceased was a young unmarried man of about 22 years. His parents reside in Napier and their grief will bo shared by the large number of friends McGrath had made in Wanganui. The body will be conveyed to Napier to-mor-row for interment. ,

An inquest will be held to-morrow morning at 11.30 o’clock. Mr. Treadwell will appear for the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, and Mr. Mackay for the Engine Drivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association.
