IMMIGRATION.
There seems to ho still room for improvement in the conduct of the High Commissioner’* office at London, especially in re-' gard to supplying information about New Zealand to intending immigrants. The Christchurch office of the Labour Department has received a letter from an English engineer, possessed of four children and a email, amount of capital, who com. plains that wh.cn ho inquired at tho High Commissioner’s office he was “Bent a lot "of steamship bills and a few Government pamphlets,” but did not secure any answer to his personal questions, for the reason, ho supposes, “that they did not know,” This should not he. Canada spends a big sum of money annually in its successful endeavours to encourage immigration to ■its shores, and Australia is also waking up to the necessity oT putting forth fresh efforts. New Zealand is as much in need of of papulation as any of the other colonics, and it is to bo regretted that the “cares of State,” tho rod-tapeism, ennui, or ignorance of the representatives of tho Dominion at Homo should prevent ns from getting a fair and - reasonable proportion of tho floating population of Europe. New Zealand is heavily handicapped by distance without having the additional drawback such as is alluded to above.
