The evidence showed that the family lived in great poverty -and misery. On the night the child was killed the children went to bed {oodless. The medical evidence showed that the deceased had probably been rendered ..unconscious ■by a blow and then the jugular vein severed. The doctor detailed otlier ; horrifying injuries. ,i One witness heard a three-year-old sister of the deceased prattling to herself “Poor WTclpe; Daddio beat Wickie with bottle.”. The child was asked where Wiokie was, and replied “Daddy take her up the bush.”‘ ; ' • '
the tragedy deenrred at Willoughby. The body of .an .eight-ye.mvolddaughter of a labourer named Phillips was found buried in the busli, a short distance from her home, where she lived . with her parents. There. Was, .a wound ,in the head, and a deep ,gaslr" in the throat, almost severing the head. The body was discovered through a man gathering flowers. The police detained .Phillips.
