AUCKLAND GOVERNMENT HOUSE

EXPLANATION BY HON. CEO. FOWLDS. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, April 27. Speaking of the determination of the Government to do away with the Government house at Auckland, the Hon. Geo. Fowlds said to a Post reporter to-day:— It was announced in the Gadget last year that the house and grounds were to 'be handed over for University College purposes, and that would probably have been done last year but for the lack of time. There has been a suggestion made that part of the ground ought to be made available for grammar school purposes. It is true that a grammar school needs something in the ■way of a playground, and my view all along has been that it was admirably suited for university college purposes, and if left open, as college grounds usually are, it would be available for the people of Auckland as a beauty spot and pleasure ground as well as serving the purpose of higher education.
