NEARLY A DUEL.

A duel has been narrowly averted between Count Witte, the well-known Russian statesman, and General Kuropatkin Isays an Australian press cable). Count VVitte had declared that modern Russian commanders were lacking in moral courage. General Kuropatkin regarded the remark as personal, and promptly challenged the count to a combat. The latter, however, explained that his remarks were not directed at anyone in particular, but were intended to have a general application, and this explanation was accepted by the general.
