THEFTS FROM CATHEDRAL. Gems Recovered. Press •Association—-Teleeranh.-—Copyright. ST. PETERSBURG, April 23. The State Jewels*, stolen', frorti Upensky Cathedral, in the Kremlin. Moscow, have been recovered through the' thief (a peasant named Femin) indicating their whereabouts. 1 ■ , Six hundred and; forty-two gems, including a magnificent diamond necklace, were stolen. DISCOVERY OF THE THIEF. Received April‘2s, 10.10 a.m. ST. PETERSBURG, April 24. Femin, the culprit, in connection with the theft of State jewels from Uspensky Cathedral, was discovered inside the Cathedral despite the fact that the Cathedral had been thoroughly searched ‘previously. After searching for 36 houhs the jewels were discovered hidden in a tomb.
Of the sacred buildings of the Kremlin, Moscow, the Uspensky Cathedral is the most venerated. It contains the oldest holy pictures in, Russia, one of which is attributed to Metropolitan Peter and another to St. Luke. This last was* brought from Kieit to Vladimir in 1155, and thence toMoscow.iil-1395.. Its jewelled metallic cover, is valued at .£20,000. The Kremlin, the citadel of Moscow, is a highly picturesque and interesting triangular enclosure, about one and a half miles in circuit. It,,contains the Imperial palace, maiiy churches, and cathedrals, the arsenal, the Ascension Convent, the famous. great; bgjll, ,and the Miracle Monastery.
