Mb Buddo’s curious character for consistency and inconsistency—consistency, for instance, such' as adhering to an absurd decision to prohibit animals landing in New Zealand for the Aramoho Zoo, and inconsistency such as he has displayed in regard to the Aramoho borough and amalgamation proposals—continues to bring ridicule not only upon himself, but upon the 1 Government with which he is associated. His latest absurdity is in connection with the shooting season. The Canterbury Acclimatisation Society in February last, in response to a petition from Ellesmere residents, agreed to recommend an open season for grey ducks and swans for the month of June. To this Mr Buddo replied that he could not make an exception in favour of the season being opened in any district this year. Subsequently the Canterbury .Society found it had been illadvised, and (fiat a close season was really necessary, but did not then communicate with the Minister, as he had given them to understand tho Government’s decision to observe a close season would be adhered to. It transpired, however, that societies in other parts of the Dominion wanted duck shooting, and Mr Buddo then announced that there would be an open season. The Canterbury Society thereupon decided to withdraw its application for the open season, but Mr Buddo now says ho “cannot recede from tho former position taken up on the advice of the Society,” an open season will be gazetted, and ducks and swans will be shot by those who think they ought to bo protected. Really, Mr Buddo’s , actions are childish ;n the extreme. ... .
