LATE LOCALS.

The New Zealand Shipping Company have been advised that the Ruapehu arrived at Plymouth ou Wednesday. There were over 50 members, present last , night on the occasipnvof opening the T.Y.M.I. Club’s .winter‘season. About thirty applications for membership were handed in, and a further number will be '.resented at the next council meeting •to be held on Monday niglit. The Dominion states that Powelka. who is now in, custody at the Wellington gaol, is in a state of great dejection, and is also in very weak health after the excitement of his recent escape. He eats and s - ps very little and, a warder remains by him day and night.

One of Wellington’s leading medical men has expressed the opinion that the present typhoid cases are caused through the . ating of infected oysters. There are oyster beds in Evans Bay, where oysters from the Bluff are stored until required for consumption. Of recent years houses have been built along the shore of the bay, and as there is no proper drainage system, the sewage from certain houses finds its’ way into the bay. Evidently, if such is the case, the oyster beds should be shifted there was recently one fatal case of typhoid at Evans Bay. It has been suggested to ns that there is a strong probability that the congestion of traffic at noon on the Guyton Street crossing is very likely to result in an accident. The children from the Infant School cross this busy portion of the street about t!ie same time as two cars are passing, and the fact that so many vehicles, cycles, and pedestrians are moving in the street at till* hour combines to make crossing dangerous to the unwary. The presence of the pol’ceman on duty in the Avenue, for the purpose of controlling the traffic, would ;.nd to obviate the difficulty.
