CANADIAN SELF-RELIANCE.

A large amount of Canada’s prosperity ’s due to the fact that Canadians believe, not only in their country, but in themselves. They believe that what others have don 3 they can do, and so far from excessive indulgence in importing have a habit o* themselves manufacturing articles wliicn other countries with less self-reliance pay the foreigner to make for them. Canai.a thus not only retains a large amount ot inonCiy which would otherwise leave tin country, but finds employment for her own workers. The recently cabled statement that Canada will build her own navy is a case in point. The cost will be more than if built in Britain. That is it will only appear to be more, for while the cost per ship will be greater, the benefit, both direct and indirect, to the country at large will more than compensate for the extra number of dollars each ship, will cost. It is a poor sort ot economy after all whicn prefers to give an outside manufacturer, say, £IO,OOO, when we can fill the same order for .£12,000. The individual who gives the order of course saves ,£2OOO, but the country suffers the loss of the whol i £IO,OOO. And when the giver of the order is the country itself, as represented by the Government, it would seem to be eopnd .policy for it to retain the money in the country and give employment to its own people. Canada’s action is to be commended as both self-reliant and patriotic.
