ATHLETIC.

BY “VICTOB.” The Hawera Amateur Athletic Club held their inaugural sports meeting last Saturday, when the weather was tine, but the attendance was hot large. The fields were good, . and the racing interesting. The Maiden Handicap fell to M. Say well 3yds, A. McDonald 3yds, finishing second. McDonald won the . 100 yds and the 220 yds handicaps, also the long jump, Saywell running second in each of the two former events. A. Thomson. 80yds, won tie Mile, and H. Burdekin, 10yds, the,44oyds. A. L. Treesider, 45yds, scored in the 880 yds. A. A. Taylor, the well-known Sydney professional sprinter, was on scratch, foi all the; sprint events at the big meeting which was to have been held-in Stawell (Vic) during Easter. Taylor has .come to the front rapidly, and is now in the front rank of the world’s; sprinters. Entered in the' distance events and on a back mark was W. P. Steele, the Victorian teur, who won the Australian three miles -championship in 1905 at • the Sydney Cricket Groimjd. The name of W. F. Trembath was also among the 1 sprintprs. This would be the New Zealander who won the 880 yards Australasian championship in Hobart in 1908. Trembath has turned professional, and is evidently looked noon as a dangerous man, as he has received onlv 3|yds from Taylor in the 130 yards and syds in the 220 yards. Ex-amateur champions are fairly successful as professionals, and these handicaps, prove that promoters have good opinions of these men.

The Taylor mentioned above is looked upon as being one of the most brilliant .sprinters at present running. It is considered in Sydney that if a championship race amongst the world’s best professionals were held, Australia would occupy the first three places with Donaldson, Postle. and Taylor.
