WANGANUI GUARDS

The annual general meeting of the above corps was held in the Drill Hall last evening, Captain Harper presiding over a large number of members.

REPORTS.—The annual report. Shooting Committee’s report, and balance-sheet were read, and much satisfaction was expressed at the sound financial position In which the balance-sheet disclosed the Company to be.

OFFICIALS.—Keen interest was taken by the members for positions on the Council, arid other committees for the ensuing year, and the following were elected to the various offices;— Treasurer, Captain H. S. G. Harper (re-elected); hon. secretary, J. B. Cade (re-elected); auditor, F. Bourne; armourers, Corpl. Huwyler (re-elected), and Corpl. H. Allen; clothiers, Sergt. A. H. Webb and LaucelSorpl. O’Brien; Shooting Committee, Lieut. Cox. Col.-Ser-geant Carmody, Huwyler and Allen, Vols. Kencli and Watts, it was decided that the Shooting Committee be allowed to elect their own handicapper. Council, Col.-Sergt. Carmody, Sergt. A. H. Webb’ Corpls. Huwyler and Allen, Vols. Larkins and Masemam THANKS.—Hearty votes 1; of ; tnanks rind appreciation were carried to the retiring office-bearers, donors of trophies, and the Press. ;■' ' SMOKE CONCERT. After the meeting the members adjourned to Dustin’s rooms, where a very pleasant and convivial hour and a; half was spent, Mr Dustin excelling hiniself in his en-' deavour to treat the members of his old company to the best of his ability. The toast list honoured was “The King,” "Other Local Companies,” proposed by Captain Harper, and responded to by Capt. McNaught, and “Officers,” proposed by Lance-Corpl. McElwain and replied to by Cant. Harper, Lieutenants Cade and Cox. The following members contributed items during the evening;—Lance-Corpl. McElwain, Pvte. Johnson, Vol. Larkins, Corpl. Quin. Vols. Brider and Mitchell. During the evening. Lieutenant J. R. Cade, who has held the nosition of hon. secretary to the Company for many years was the recipient of a presentation, which took the form of a substantial sovereign case. The presentation was'made by Captain Harper in a eulogistic speech, who stated, en passant, that Mr Cade was oik who did a great deal of good work in an unostentatious manner, of which the Company were very often quite ignorant. Mr Cade expressed both surprise and pleasure and thanked one and all for their kind wishes and handsome present, of which he left he was not in the least deserving for he stated that w’hat he had done was done as a labour of love.

The evening concluded with the sinking of Auld Lang- Syne”, and hearty cheer, tor Captains McNaught and Harper.
