NOTES BY “FOOT FAULT,”

The .prizes at the recent tournament were well distributed. The men’s championship, singles went to Auckland (Morpeth), ladies’ championship singles to New 'Plymouth; (Miss Brewster), men’s championship doubles Hawera (Caplen ’ and Sellar), -ladies’ championship doubles Patea (Mrs Jones and Miss-Powdrell, men’s A grade handicap New Plymouth (Morton), B grade FOrder, (Anderson), ladies’ handicap singles Sydney (Miss Williams), ladies’ handicap doubles Wanganui (Mrs Slipper and Mrs Gordon), combined handicap doubles Palmerston North and Wanganui (Miss E. Wilson and Pownall). - The semi-final and final of the combined championship doubles are to be played in Wayerley, probably, on Friday next. The running of the tournament was a great improvement on last year, due to a great ; extent to the fact that only one ground had to be used. Amongst those who worked hard for the success of the meeting Messrs Cook and McElwain must be mentioned. They gave up their whole time to" seeing that the courts were kept filled, and wpre very successful , in' their efforts. Too much praise cannot be given to Mr Cyril Goldsbury .for the immense amount of work he has put in, both before and during the meeting. He worked early,, and late, and no detail Was. omitted by him that would help towards a successful issue'. When it is remembered that the courts used had received no preparation until taken in hand by Mr Wilson a few weeks -ago, the way they played was a striking tribute to his skill .and perseverance'. The visitors, of whom, there were about 80 playing, expressed themselves delighted with their stay here, and their intention of coming • again' next year jf l possible. '• ■ ■ ■■ -S •’

One thing that helped - towards the enjoyment of the meeting was the absence of “pot hunters.” Players were there for pleasure, and although all played hard to win, the losers in almost every case were the first to congratulate their conquerors and wish them luck in tlieir future games. Of the play it may safely he said that it was a long way ahead of the standard of last year. The play of local competitors Butterworth, Tuke, Marshall, and Allan in particular, compared favourably with that of tlie outsiders, but the ladies’ play in Wanganui is not of a particularly high standard. However, it is improving, as is evidenced by the win of Mrs Gordon and Mrs Slipper from" a comparatively short mark. ,

Visits from players. like Misses Powdrell, Williams, Brewster, Wilson, Nevill, and. the Hughes sisters unuat -do a great deal towards teaching the local girls Djore in a tournament than they would learn in a season playing by themselves. In the Maori tennis tournament at Palmerston, for a handsome silver cup presented by Mr T. Utiku Marumaru nine teams took part from Wanganui Hawke s Bay, Aorangi, and Parewanui. In the first round Wanganui defeated Aorangi A by eight sets to .nil. Hawke’s Bay won from Moatuiti, eight sets to nil. Hawke’s Bay against Wanganui ended in a draw, both teams scoring four sets each Parewanui B defeated Aorangi B .by seven sets to one. Parewanui A had a bye. The ladies’ singles was won by Miss Stain ton, and the men’s singles by Tomoana.
