WANGANUI BOROUGH COUNCIL

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Wanganui Borough Council was held m the Council Chambers last night. Present:—Crs. E. N. Liffiton (in the chair), G. Spriggens, G. Carson, J. Calmer, J. P. Holloway, J. Williams, and A. Burgess. Leave of absence was granted to his Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. E. Mackay), Crs. Povnter and Young. GUYTON STREET CROSSING.—Letter from Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister of Railways, intimating that he would visit Wanganui on his return from Australia. —Received.

AMALGAMATION.— Letter from the Minister of Interna] Affairs stating that he would advise the Governor to annex Aramoho to the Borough of Wanganui, the annexation to date from April Ist, 1910.—Received.

TOWN BRlDGE.—tetter from the Public Works Department stating the total cost of repairs was £5216 Bs. 2d. and asking for a settlement of the balance of the Council’s share amounting to £784 4s. Id.—The amount was passed for payment.

WAIER SUPPLY.—Letter from the District Engineer asking terms on which the Council would give a 6-inch pipe connection with the Eastown workshops.— Referred to the Waterworks Committee. BILLIARD LICENSE.—Letter from J. H. Barnhill applying for a renewal of his billiard saloon license.—Decided that the question of the granting of licenses be left in the hands of Crs. Carson, Spriggens and the Town Clerk. INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE.—A committee consisting of Crs. Poynter and Burgess was appointed to act for the Council in a dispute in which the Council was cited as a party.

£12,000 LOAN.—The Mayor and Cr. Burgess were appointed commissioners of the sinking fund in connection with this loan.

PUBLIC LIBRARY.—A deputation consisting of Dr. Hatherlv and Messrs. Currie and Allison, waited on the Council and applied for ah increase in the grant for the maintenance of the Library. After Dr. Hatherlv had furnished considerable information, and stated the position of the library funds at present, he was assured of ihe sympathy of the Council, and a committee consisting of Gy a. Carson, Holloway, Spriggens, and ftiisms was appointed to confer with the library committee and report TRAMWAYS REPORT—Report of the Tramway Committee of 22nd March, 1910. Re car advertising rights—The committee has considered Mr. Charles’ objection to the Council exhibiting cer- ? oticp ? W the windows of the cars, and the solicitors’ opinion has been taken on the matter. We have given instructions that-Mr. Charles be informed that advertisements will not be exhibited, but that the Council reserve its right to hang such notices to passengers as clearly set out the destinations of thb car, and that give intending passengers directions as to what car to take to enable them to reach any function that may be held in the vicimty of a tram terminus or en route. Re A.. Evett’s claim for payment in lieu of notice; the committee has left tills matter to the Chairman to deal with. Re A. Robinson’s claim for damage ; the Chairman has been requested to interview Mr. Robinson and to deal with the matter.—Adopted. WORKS.—Report of the Works Committee of 24th March, 1910. Re Tar .Spraying Machine—The committee has requested the Engineer to obtain further particulars regarding these machines. Ke Hatrick Street.—We recommend that the Borough Solicitor be directed" to take the necessary steps to have Hatrick Street extension gazetted as a legal street. Re road through Council’s property at Mangawhero—The Committee recommend the Council to consent to the land being granted, on compensation at the rate of £6 per acre being paid, and that the Department of Lands and Snrve™J?e wpUfied accordingly.—Adopted. FINANCE.—The report of the Finance Committee was adopted.
