NEW ZEALAND v. AUSTRALIA. SECOND TEST MATCH. VISITORS WIN BY 162 RUNS. (Per Uniter! Press 'Association.) . WELINGTON. March 29. The second test match Australia v. New Zealand concluded this afternoon, Australia winning by 162 runs. The attendance for the third day's play was very meagre, only ,£33 being taken at the gate, making a total for the three days of .£325. The Australians proved vastly superior to the New Zealanders, their fielding and running between the wickets showing that /much had to be learned by our cricketers in these departments alone. Sale, Reese, Sims, and Brice all did well throughout the match. Taken generally, the New Zealanders’ oatting was mostly of a scratchy order, the only two haying any confidence being Brice and Sims, though Sale was doing nicely when given out to a doubtful catch behind the wickets. Brice’s innings of 43 was a clean, crisp exhibition of hard hitting, the majority of the runs being scored along the carpet. The visitors’ batting was quite of a different order to the local men. Plenty of confidence, a variety of strokes, and the, knowledge where to put the ball were the outstanding features of both their innings. Mayne’s innings of 90 was a fine lianlay of patient cricket. He displayed a thorough knowledge of the game, making some beautiful strokes on the off-side, his placing and timing being features of ! iis innings. Facey and Whitty shared the bowling honours of the match, the latter’saverage of six for 28 being remarkably good. Whitty bowled consistently all through the innings. The Australian eleven leaves for Napier on Thursday, and plays Hawke’s Bay on Friday, Saturday, and Monday following. Warne and Hopkins are standing out of the Hawke’s Bay match. Scores:
