Admiral "Sir John Arbuthnot Fisher, whose retirement from the • position of First Sea Lord of the Admiralty, is announced above, was born in 1841, and 'is thus in his 70th year. He is a son of the late, Captain William Fisher, of the -78 th Highlanders, and entered the navy' in 1854, being promoted to the rank, of lieutenant in 1860. A brilliant tactician, and possessed of the true bull dog courage, his career has never looked back, and his principal achievments may be briefly tabulated thus:—Took part in the capture of the Canton and Pieho forts, for which he obtained the Beaufort Testimonial ; served in the Crimean War, 1855; China War 1859-60; Egyptian War 1882; was promoted to the command of the “Inflexible” in the same year; Director of Naval Ardnance, 1886-91; Admiral Superintendent at Portsmouth Dockyard, 1891; Controller of the Navy; Lord of the Admiralty, 1892-97; Commander-in-Chief of the North American and West Indies Station, 1897-99; Delegate to the Peace Conference at the Hague in the latter year; Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean Station, 1899-1902; 2nd Sea Lord of the Admiralty, 1902-3;. Commander-in-Chief Portsmouth, 1903-4; i First Lord of the Admiralty, 1904-5. Truly a brilliant record!
