FOXTON, December 6
Wm. Ross and Sons' rope and twine works were totally destroyed by fire on Saturday afternoon. The insurances were .£SIOO on the stock and .£I7OO on the buildings. The loss is estimated at ,£7OOO. The origin of the fire is a mystery. PALMERSTON N., December 6.
Ross and Co.'s rope works at Foxton were totally destroyed by fire on Saturday. The works ' were closed down at the . usual time, but an hour and a half later a passer-by noticed flames issuing through one of the windows at. the opposite end, of the building from the machinery. ; . Ima few 'minutes .the building was completely enveloped in flamos, and a little later tb.e< roof collapsed. Within half an hour of the outbreak the whole building was totally destroyed, together with machinery valued at JIBOO which was used in the manufacture of all classes of rope and twines. The value of the property saved does not exceed .£SOO. The fire will, throw 70 hands out of work for a long period, owing to the fact that it will be necessary to import new machinery from England. Fortunately the direction of the wind and the ' work of a bucket brigade resulted in the offices and a row of workmen's cottages being saved.
