AMERICAN DEMAND FOR WOOL

Shearing operations are now in full swing throughout the GLsborne district, but have been hampered by the recent showery weather. Dihcu&sing the subject of prices with a- Poverty Bay Herald reporter, a we'l-k-own commercial man, referring to the operations of American buyers, explained that wool intended for the Americaai market must be fine, clean, and light in condition to warrant the payment of an import duty of 11 cents per Ib. The Americans looked for a class of wool that gave the largest possible yield. Heavy wool lost more in scouring than light-conditioned ela.sses, and th eS e gave results from 10 to 13 per cent, better. For the most part Poverty Bay wool was hardly bright enough, or sufficiently light enough in condition, to suit the Americans, with the exception of a few of the district's cho ; ce and old-established clips. Bradford prices were quite distinct from the figures offered by the Americans, and it was hard to understand the large difference that exists between the two purchasers of wool, as a perusal of a London catalogue would confirm the fact that Bradford buyers for the most part were offering a fair parity of value at such figures as 8d to 9d. Questioned as to prices obtained locally, he said that a good many sales had been effected at prices which ranged from 7.Jd to 9}d and it was understood that one special line had exceeded this.

Victoria Avenue, particularly the main business side, has undergone many change^ recently, so many buildings have been removed, to be replaced by large and more modern places. Another business place which is shortly to be re-built on an improved plan is Wilton's Avenue Pharmacy. Some little time hence will see the presen- building removed preparatory to the erection of the new place. This will mean a move iuto temporary premises for a time, and the very large stoclc now carried, is mostly to be sold before then. To facilitate me quick reducing of this huge lot of good-quality drugd and .sundries, special discounts will be given.
