SWIMMING
l 4 INCLUSION IN SCHOOI/ SUBJECTS
AUCKLAND, April 21. Some time ago the Board of Education expressed the opinion that something should be done in the direction of encouraging swimming among the young people of New Zealand. The matter was referred to the Headmasters' Association, asking tLeir opinion as to making swimming and life-saving compulsory subjects. Tne reply of the Association was read at the meeting of the Board to-day, and was to the effect that it would be difficult to do this without interfering with other work. If swimming were substituted for woodwork and cookery for a part of the year the idea would be possible in the cases ot mOSt Of tlie City and suburban schools. -M-r George said that a number of country schools had taken up the art of swimming as a study. He suggested that the sumn er holidays be utilised in teaching children to swim. If the matter was held over for a few months he would present a scheme. Mr George's idea was approved, and he was asked to report to a subsequent meeting.
