The matter was referred to the Headmasters' Association, asking tLeir opinion as to making swimming and life-saving compulsory subjects. Tne reply of the Association was read at the meeting of the Board to-day, and was to the effect that it would be difficult to do this without interfering with other work. If swimming were substituted for woodwork and cookery for a part of the year the idea would be possible in the cases ot mOSt Of tlie City and suburban schools. -M-r George said that a number of country schools had taken up the art of swimming as a study. He suggested that the sumn er holidays be utilised in teaching children to swim. If the matter was held over for a few months he would present a scheme. Mr George's idea was approved, and he was asked to report to a subsequent meeting.
