BY "ACHILLES."

B. Deeley, the Auckland horseman whose mount fell ( with him yesterday, is not dangerously hurt. He suffered a severe scalp laceration. He leaves for Auckland by today's train.

Prior to winning the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase the French horse Lutteur 111. put up a striking performance at Hurst Park. Though the outsider in a field of four in the Champion Sweepstakes Steeplechase, of, three miles and a quarter, he led all the way iv the last two miles' and won very easily. The starters carried list 71b each, and the race was a sweep of 100 eovs each and a gold cup of the value of 300 soys for the winner, and a silver cup, value 50 soys, for the trainer of the winner. Erg] i9h papers to hand record the fact that Mr J. W. Larnach's staHion, Jeddah, who cheated a grea*: sensat'on by wmTim? the Epso n Derby of Is9B, died recently at the Lanwadts Stud Farm. Bred in ISOS, by his owner, Jeddah was a chestnut son of Janissary — Pilgrimage. H^ did practically nothing as a two-year-old, but the following year he showed smartness in winning the Craven Stakes at Newmarket, from Schomberg. Calveley, and others. He did not maintain this form, for he failed badly in the Two Thousand Guineas and Newmarket Stakes, won respectively by Disraeli and Cyllene. As a natural consequence Jeddah 'e chance of winning the Derby was generally regarded as hopeless. Indeed, Richard Marsh, w>o trained Mr Larnach's colt, bad a muchfancied candidate in Dieudonne, and the latter, who carried the late Duke of Devonshire's colours, started second favourite at 7 to 2, Disraeli, the Two Thousand Guineas winner, being at 2 to 1. Possibly Mr Larnaah himself had little hopes of success, but decided to give his colt a chance, with the result that, jn the hands of Maiden, Jeddah galloped home threeparts of a length in front of Batt, with Dunlop a length and a half behind. Jeddah's starting price was 100 to 1, odds which have only on one other occasion been returned against a Derby winner. That his victory was not altogether a flash in the pan he showed by winning the valuable Prince of Wales' Stakes. Batt again being second. In the St. Leger at Doncaster, however, he had to strike Ms colours to Wildflower, who had been really kept for the race. Jeddah only ran once aftnrwards, being well beaten by Flying Fox in the Jockey Club Stakes.
