Funeral Obsequies

The funeral obsequies of the . Primate were most in^mva-iive. A .solemn service was held in St. Andrew's Cathedral, which vas packed, the congregation embracing a large number of clergymen, including many of other denominations besides Anglican. Thousands of people gathered outside the Cathedral, and watched the long procession along the route to Waverley Cemetery. It is estimated that 10,000 assembled at the cemetery. The Archbishop of Melbourne and the Bishop of Goulburn officiated at the grave. There was an immense number of beautiful floral offerings.

The late Archbishop of Sydney, the state of whose health has occasioned considerable anxiety of late, was born at St. Helier, Jersey (Channel Islands), on January 14, 1836, his father being the Rev. Richard Snowdon Smith, prebendary of Chichester. He was educated at Marlborough and Trinity College^ Cambridge, and was ordained as deacon in 1859, and as priest in the following year. He was curate of St. Paul's Cambridge, from 1859 to 1861, and was chaplain to the Bishop of Madras" from 1861 till 1865. He held several other positions, and from 1869 till 1890 was principal of St. Aidan's College, Birkenhead. In 1890 he was appointed Bishop of Sydney, and seven years later he received the title of archbishop. The late prelate was the author of several theological works. He 'was married in 1870 to Florence, daughter of the Rev. L. Deedes, Rector of Eraniwell, and she died in 1890. The Archbishop leaves a eon (Rev. Saumarez Smith) and three daughters. For some years his son had acted as his chaplain. He was a man of broad and tolerant views, and though not a particularly powerful preacher he had .many, other qualities which made him a great Church leader. . ■
