THE BOROUGH ELECTIONS.

Tile Borough Council election is not to go by default, as seemed likely to be the case yesterday. At the last moment several well-known citizens have been prevailed upon to offer themselves as candidates, and when nominations closed at noon to-day the list disclosed the names of Messrs O. Allomes, A. S. Burgess, J. D. Brechin, J. Calver, G. Carson, W. Grey, F A Harkness, J. F. Holloway, P. Lewis, E. N Liffiton, C. W. Poynter, G. Spriggens, J. Williams, and W. L. Young— l 4 candidates for the nine vacancies. Messrs Carson, Harkness, Liffiton, Poynter, and Spriggens were members of the last Council, and the others, though new'to Wanganui municipal work, are by no means inexperienced in local public affairs. Messrs. Burgess, Grey, Holloway, Lewis, and Young have each and all taken a prominent part in many local bodies,, institutions and functions of general -public interest, Messrs Allomes and Brechin, "though well-known citizens, have not had a great deal to do with public affairs, while Mr Williams has had past experience in another part of the Dominion in municipal affairs, and is known to be a man of progressive ideas and enterprise, and withal a successful business man. From this list there should be no difficulty in electing a Council acceptable to the bulk of the burgesses. Messrs -Battle, Mackay, and Muir have been nominated for the Mayoralty, and an interesting triangular duel should be witnessed. For the Wanganui East Council Mr J. Jones has been ' paid the welldrserved compliment of re-election for Mayor, and there are also 14 candidates for the eight seats at the Council table. It is pleasing to now note the signs of civic activity, which hitherto have not been so apparent.
