At the annual meeting of the Rugby Union on Saturday night, a letter was received from Mr W. Empson resigning his position as patron of that body, and wishing the Union, every success in the future. Mr Spriggens made feeling reference to the loas football would sustain in Mr Empson'a dparture, and later in the evening moved that Mr Empson be elected a life member of the Union. This, was carried amidst applause. The death occurred at Taihape y%-ter-day of Mr Francis Henry Gibbons, licensee of the Gretna Hotel in that township. The deceased, who was 39 years of age, was the eldest eon of the late Mr Samuel Gibbons, of Marton, and news of his death will be received with sincere regret by n»a:sy friends.
