E. J. Williams, the well-known local crack amateur runner J left by to-day's express for Wellington, to compete at an amateur meeting to be held in the Empire City to-morrow under the ausjnees of the Wellington Amateur Club. In addition to competing in some of the handicap events, Williams will take part in an invitation sciatch quarter mile race, in which the following championship aspirants have been invited to icompete: — E. J. Williams (, Wanganui), T. Stnbbs (Palmerston North), J. Wilton (Wellington), and E. E. Fisher (Wellington). Great interest is being taken in this contest, an done of the best races seen on the Basin Reserve is anticipated. The winner of this trial will be included in the team to represent Wellington province at the New Zealand Championship Meeting, to bo held at Dunedin on the Saturday following, the 20th insl. Williams is in capital form, and may be depended upon to put up' a big race in the 440 yds trial to-morrow, and also in the 880 yds ha«dicap, in which lie 'will meet A. El Surge, the present New Zealand mile champion.
