THE POLICE PROVIDENT FUND

(Per United Press Association). WELLINGTON, October 3. A meeting of the Wellington poUce force presided over by Inspector Ellison, opposed the proposal to merge the police provident fund into the general superannuation scheme. Special allusion was made to the fact that persons can join the Civil Service at 15 or 16, whereas policemen cannot enter the force till 21, and are frequently much older. Another argument was that the proposal implied a breach of faith on the part of the Government. The police had contributed to the fund on the' strength of an Act of Parliament, which it was now proposed to repeal without consulting them. No contribution had been made by the Government, and the fund now amounted to .£30,500, and had, according to the Commissioner, saved the Government .£IB,OOO. The meeting resolved that it was desirable that time should be given to enable the police to fully consider the position.
