CHRISTCHURCH, October 2.
Mr O. F. Clothier, a candidate for the Huruuui seat, addressed his opening iheeting at the Amberley Town Hall last evening. Mr Clothier, who declared himself as a straight out Oppositionist, dealt p:in cipally with land legislation. He praised the Lands for Settlements Act and many other Government measures, but declared in favour of the freehold. He taid that much of the borrowing done by the Government had been good, and the money invested in reproductive works, but the expenditure on. luxuries, such as the bath-bouse at Rotorua, was unwarranted. In reply to questions, Mr Clothier said that he was opposed to an increase of members' honorarium. He did not object to the charge on banking accounts and exchange. He did not see how the country could go on without borrowing. He would give the freehold to all Crown tenants, including those on land for settlement. He would limit the freehold area at the present limit, but in years to come the limit might have to be reduced. He favoured an elective executive, and the abolition of the totalizator.
The candidate was accorded a vote of thanks.
