(Per United Press Association).

WELLINGTON, October r.

At the enquiry into the circumstances of the collision of the steamer Gertie and the Penguin C. A. Pearson (second engineer of the Gertie), and J. W. Watson (chief mate of the Gertie), gave evidence. The latter said the action of the Penguin's master in porting his helm and running between the beacon and the headland was, to his mind, the cause of the collision. F. R. Gamble (second officer of the Penguin), flio woe -on the bridg-« -wlicn the collision occurred, said if the captain of the Gertie had starboarded his helm instead, of porting it she would have cleared the Penguin. He had the impression that the Gertie's captaiu had lost his head.. Captain R. Stewart (who was master of the Penguin when the collision took place), said he could not remember having said, the collision would not have occurred' had he been on the bridge. The inquiry will be resumed to-morrow.
