(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 2. An, equiry is being held to-day into the circumstances of the collision of the steamer Gertie with the Penguin off Jackson's Head on the 3rd September. Captain Rodger, master of the Gertie, in his evidence, stated that the Gertie was on the way from Westport to Picton on the day in question. She was steaming at the rate of eight knots. About two miles from Jackson's Head he altered the course for the Head. The Penguin was approaching, •ad the vessels struck about 400 or 500

r feet to the west of the beacon. When the _ collision occur ed witness was standing by wfche telegraph on the bridge, where he had all the afternoon. The Penguin was flight on the Gertie's quarter when witness telegraphed, "Stop port engine." The Penguin tried to pass the Gertie at full speed, and she sheered off under a port . helm, and her port quarter caught the Gertie's starboard after davit and scraped along for about 10 feet.
