Turkish Uneasiness
LONDON, October 1.
The Times Constantinople correspondent mentions the growing uneasiness among educated Turks at the possibility of Bulgaria shortly declaring her independence, it emphasises, firstly that the belief is based on the telegrams from Sofia that the Bulgarian manoeuvres, which were supposed to be postponed till 1909, will be held after .all in the near future in Eastern Roumelia, .and will involve the mobilisation of many reservites. Secondly, the apprehension that Prince lerdinand's, xnagnifioent reception during the past few -ays at Buda Pesth is not unconnected with the, rumours of Austrian designs on the annexation, or permanent occupation of Bosnia. Nevertheless, Eiamel is confident of a peaceful settlement of all questions.
The Times', -St t Petersburg correspondent states that alarm .has been revived at the Viennese telegrams foreshadowing the Jpernia^ent retention of the occupied province's^. statesmen, believing that the other Powers are interested to let sleeping dogs lie, are still hopeful that Austria will be prevented from setting the Balkans ablaze.
[The principality of Bulgaria was created by the Treaty of Berlin, signed July 13, 1878. It was ordered by the treaty that Bulgaria should 'be constituted an autonomous and tributary principality under the suzerainty of the Sultan, with a Christian Government and a national militia, and that the Prince of Bulgaria should be' freely elected by the population and confirmed by the Sublime Porte, with the consent of the Powers, but tLat no member of any of the reigning houses of the great European Powers be elicted. The railway connecting Constantinople with Austria and Western- Europe passes through Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria; and the Bulgarians have aho a scheme for a railway from Sofia, via Eustendil and Eumanovo to Uskub, the object being to attract Roumanian and Russian traffic]
