MAORIS AND THEIR LAND.
(Per United Prose Association). WELLINGTON. September 30. Speaking at the sitting- of the Maori Land Commission which is dealing with certain native matters, including the Orakci leases at Auckland, the Chief Justice 6<ud there w;is no use saving ar-thing-about the natives being- saHsfird with the amount of rent they received for their lands. Die experience lias convinced him that the Maoris did not know the value of their land, and in his opinion the only fair way of dealing with such eases was to '■•lit them up to auction, for the Maori had no chance at all with a shrewd, smart, business man.
