AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS. ETC.

IEENE AINSLEY AT WAVERLEY.

A crowded and enthusiastic house gfreefce<l -fclae al>ove a.rtisfce, -fclie pioneer o£ first-class artists to visit Waverley, the township being fortunate in Miss Ainsley having a spare night, caused by an unforseen qlashing of dates with Mr. Chas. Saunders at Hawei-a. Mr Warwick Ainsley informs us that in all his experience — and he has travelled all over the world — he has never met with a more appreciative or musical and attentive audience than that which assembled in Waverley on Monday evening, while of the sounding qualities of the flail Mr Ainsley has nothing- but praise considering it one of the best in the Dominion, and the condition of the building reflected the greatest credit on those responsible for its upkeep. As before mentioned Miss z insley met with an enthusiastic reception, her every number being encored, in fact,

triple encores ware frequent, and the talented singer had great difficulty in. getting oft' the stage on occasions, so insistent was the applause. Included in her numbers were "Absent" (Metcalfe), "Life s Recompense" (Del Ricgo), "The .Liost Clibrd" (Sullivan), Liza Schu man's exquisite setting of "Annie Laurie," and majiy others. It goes without saying that, before such an audience the delightful singing of such an artist as Mr. Hamilton Hodges met with a reception worthy of the great -singer he is. His numbers .included "Across the Far Blue Hills' (Blumenthail), an exquisite collection of three songs by Herrman. Lohr (a) "You JUove^ the Time of Violets," (b) "Eyes that used to Gaze," (c) "Youth has a happy tread,' all of which were encored, while even after the artist had generously responded again and again the audience was not satisfied, and eagerly tk-moured for more. Mrs Ernest H. Queree, solo pianist, rendered several items in a- masterly manner, her technique being brilliant and appealing. She also accompanied the various singers in a manner leaving nothing to be desired. Taken, altogether the concert was one that will, long be remembered in vVaverley, as the richest musical treat ever enjoyed there. The company appears in Wanganui to-night, and can be confidently recommended to all music lovers.
