Quid Pro Quo

TO THB XDITOB.

Sir, — During my somewhat lengthy and chequered career it has been my misfortune to have had on several occasions .to seek the advice and surgical aid of your local hospital — misfortune in one respect, but good fortune in other respects, that there are such splendid institutions for all of us to be able to enter in our hour of need. I have now been an inmate of that institution for some time, and have just left, quite well and reinvigorated for the battle of life. Upon leaving I deem it my duty to return . my sincere thanks to the doctor, matron, and nurses for the skill and kindness and unremitting attention I have received during my stay there. As far as I have seen during my enforced stay, everything has been done that was conductive to the welfare of the patients. Entertainments of every description (of course in a rational manner) have been allowed in the evening for the amusement of the patients, in order to relieve the monotony- that would at times prevail. — I am, etc.,

F. W. GRAHAM.

The Dominion letter-carriers are to be provided with a new shako (telegraphs a Wellington correspondent). Mr F. M. B. Fisher, M.P., heard rumours that it was to weigh two pounds. Sir Joseph Ward says the rumours are not true; the average weight will be 7oz. all rouifd, whicn is the same weight as the police headgear. The department is assured by a leawng firm of hatmake-rs that the weight is comparatively light for a uniform shako. The volunteer slouch hat, which is understood to be like that worn by the troops in South Africa, weighs 8 1-5 ozs. A sample of the shako was submitted some time ago to the Wellington letter-carriers, who were reported to be unanimously in favour of it as being in every way more suitable than any headgear yet provided for letter-carriers. The shako is designed to provide perfect protection from rain and sun.
