WAVERLEY NOTES.

(From our own correspondent.) * WAVERLEY, September 28. The Whenuakura — Waitotara Road

Board held its monthly meeting in the Board's office on Friday, when Messrs D. McDonala (chairman), VV. Brewer, E. J Wilson were present. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, the balance in the bank to the credit of the Board was stated by the clerk" to be £430 14s 4d. v " • The question of procuring a complete eet of the newly Consolidated Statutes from the Government waa held over for the- present. Accounts amounting to £32 16s 8d were passed for payment. A motion 'was passed that no rate be struck for the year 1908-9. Some discussion took place with reference to the hiring dut ot the road jjrader, the property of tjjte Board, to other bodies. It was finally, resolved that 7b 6d per day be charged for the use of the grader. Mr D. Taylor was appointed to inspect the machjne on ite^return to the shed, and the' parties hiring same will have to make good all* breakages, etc. The charge of 7e; 6d per, day for the" use the grader isHobk^d upon, as very reasonable, .md ihe/inachine will be 'of great assistance to other Boards in the formation of i roads,' etc. - • I • '"A' meeting of the Okotuku Road Board was* also held in the Board's office on Ffiday,> for' the' purpose chiefly of dis- J CTtaevag a resolution regarding the special rating area for the proposed loan for the 'Maagatangi' road extension. It was { resolved that the resolution for this special- area be confirmed at a special meeting Uf 'the Board, to be held on the oOth October. . f -..Th6 ' Motoroa Road Board, and the Wairoa Road Board also met von the same, day and passed similar resolutions ■ ■to .the above. cThe completion ■of - the Mangatangi Road, which runs through Mr D.^Cog- j hill's property, will be a. great boon to j the 'Settlers in the back country, as it |

will cut off about four miles of the jour-

ney to Waverley. I also notice that there - aye £500 on the Government Estimates for the completion of the Okotuku Road to^its junction with the Matimoana. I understand this work is to be done by cooperative labour, and when finished it will bring the settlers in t>ie back blocks

many miles nearer still to civilisation. • The new co-operative dairy factory which is being erected close to the' laiiway ■ station will, lam informed, be ready by the end of October. All the materials are now on the ground, and six carpenters are -to arrive from Wanganui at an early date, and the work will be pushed on with the utmost expedition. Our Debating Society has abandoned the- remaining contests with the Wanganui Union, the season being* now too tar advanced., and members unable to devote

tne necessary time and attention to the

subjects. ' I regret to say that Mr G. J. Fama, of the local Post and Telegraph staff, was on Friday last conveyed to the Patea Hospital, suffering Irom a severe attack of appendicitis. During Mr Fama's short residence in Waverley he lias made himself a general favourite. His many friends will be pleased to near that' he is now much better, and we all sincerely hope to see him back again amongst us soon, fully restored to health. I also hear that Mrs Wybourne, wife of Mr" W. Wybourne, of t Whenuakura, was taken to a private hospital \n Wanganui on Saturday last, suffering from appendicitis.

>I understand that the success which

has attended the canvass for members for the' "newly-formed Druids' Lodge »n this district has far exceeded the committee's expectations, and the success of the iusti-

tution is already assured. The Lodge will be officially opened ' by a representative of the New- Zealand .Grand Lodge oil. the Ist October. *

Cooper's Electric. Operascope Company has booked the Town. Hall for Friday evening, 2nd October, and if all we nave heard and read of this Company's show ia true, there is a treat in store for Waverleyites. The weather is now beautifully fine, and the country around Waver ley is looking lovely. The lambing season is almost over, and owing to the exceptianally fine weather the mortality has been very, small, and farmers are looking forward to a high percentage of lambs. Shearing parties are already being formed here, and shearing operations will very" soon be in full swing. Great strides have been made in the dairying industry in this district, there being now three factories in existence, where a tew years ago there was only one, [am* as butter is at a high figure in the -Home market, farmers are looking forward with ' confidence to a very successful season.
