SKYSCRAPER CAUSES MANY LEATHS

On Wednesday, December 11, 1872, at New York, many deaths occurred at the top of a skynerapar — not the triangular sky-sail that wavcJ) occasionally above even the Reyal flag on British ships, to which the name originally belonged, but a building with numerous glories, one above the other, to which the people of America have since popularly applied this descriptive t§rnli Thi<3 destruction of human life was caused by a flro that occurred in the Fifth Avenue Hotel, thus named after the street in which it t'tood. The servants' sleepiug quarters occupied, as so commonly elsewhere, the top floor, and 23 females of that class were burned to death, or B.iffocated, by the fire and smoke, escape being necessarily leas possible for them than for people lower down. The property destroyed was estimated to be worth nearly ,£30,000. By the end of A.D. 1900 in New York the entire appearance of the city had changed; for instead of its buildings averaging four or five stories, with six as a maximum, and seven as a rare extreme, only church spires here and there breaking the monotony of the sky line, the new buildings had by then been gradually erected higher and higher, until several reached even 29 stories, the largest of which houses were occupied by 5000 tenants. Such lofty edifices are held together by steel frames, and are furnished with elevators, or lifts, to convey persons and goods up and down.
