(Per United Press Association). DUNEDIN, April 8. The University Council to-day unanimously appointed Mr. Jas. Allen, M.P., representative on the Senate of the University of New Zealand. The Hon. George Fowlds visited the Otago University Denta} School to-day, ' and, in reply to a deputation consisting , of Mr. W. J. Allen, M.P., Dr. H. P. Pickenll (director of the school), Messrs T. A. Hunter and F. Armstrong, promised to go carefully into the question of granting an extra .£2OOO to put the , school on a footing with the best modern j institutions, and also to cover the cost of a pathological laboratory. During the day the Minister visited the Free Kindergarten at Albany Street, the Karitane Home for Infants, the Orphanage of St. Vincent de Paul, and the Taieri and Peninsula Milk. Supply Company's factory. THE AMERICAN FLEET. Preparations for Entertainment (Per United Pross Association). AULCKLAND, April 8. The Mayor, interviewed by a representative of the N.Z. Herald to-night, said he would do all he could from a civil standpoint to entertain the American Fleet in a manner befitting the occasion, and would call a public meeting to discuss the whole matter. At the same time, he emphasised the fact that the visit was one of national significance, and the invitation had been sent by the Prime Minister on behalf of New Zealand. He had no doubt Parliament would make special provision for the proper entertaining of the fleet. He suggested that Parliament should adjourn during the visit and all members come to Auckland. The Mayor also hoped the importance of the Maoris playing a prominent part in the festivities would not be lost sight of. New Zealand's invitation Officially Accepted. Auckland only to be Visited. The Secretary for the Colonies wires the Governor that the United States Government accepts with -great pleasure the invitation *>f the New .Zealand .Government for the American, fleet to visit New Zealand, but it will only be possible to visit Auckland, in view of the proposed speedy return to the Atlantic. Carroll, Native Minister, leaves by steamer this evening for Russell for the purpose of holding a % meeting of the Maoris in the North to discuss the land question with a view to the large areas now practically locked up being dealt with under the xi.cfc passed last session, whereby portions are reserved for the use- of the owners, and the balance leased and sold as desired by the committee appointed. Mr. Te Heuheu, Tukino, the Taiipo chief, will accompany the Minister, also Mr Gordon, private secretary to Mr Carroll, in the North. Mr Carroll wih be met by the native member for the northern district, Mr Hone Heke, M.P. OLD AGE PENSIONS. (Per United Press Association). AUCKLAND, April 8. The Auckland branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation to-night carried a motion expressing the opinion that the Old Age Pension Act does -not fulfil the functions for what it was originally intended, and referring the whole question and its weaknesses to the Counoil for consideration and report. The particular provision of the Act objected to was that j which penalises pensioners, by depriving them of pensions for five years for drunkenness. The Hon. W. Beehan, M.L.C., characterised this clause as infamous, and as a blot on. the statute book. THE PREMIER. ♦ (Per United Pre«» Association). CROMWELL, April 8. The Prime Minister, in his tour of Central Otago, reached Cromwell to-day, accompanied by the Hon. Duncan, Messrs Barclay, MacPherson, and W. Fraser. At Cromwell the rte-rty was joined by the Hon.
