UPOKONGARO FERRY.

Meeting of Upokonga.ro Settlers

There was a large and representative attendance at the meeting called at Upokongaro last evening to discuss the action of the Wanganui County Council in closing the ferry. Mr HAMMOND, who was voted to the chair, explained that the object of the meeting was to have the ferry re-opened, He said "he had only been in the district a short time, blit quite long enough to see that the ferry was badly needed, and should not have been closed. Mr DON ALJ).. ROSS, a. former member of the Wanganui County Council, went into the history of the ferry, explaining that 12 years ago the amount of profit derived from the ferry amounted to .£4OO, the proceeds of which were expended throughout -the district. The Council's statement as to the ferry being worked at a loss seen»ed« wrong. The Council, soon after the ferry was opened, had arranged with the Waitotara County Council to retain control of the ferry, and therefore they should continue to keep it open. It was their duty to do so. Mr H. MONTGOMERY moved, "Thai the chairman and Messrs Anderson, Ross, Harper, and Roscoe be a deputation to wait on the Wanganui County Council and ask it to reconsider its decision to close the ferry, and urge the opening of it again. The motion was seconded by Mr Campbell and carried.

It was resolved that the deputation should wait on the Council at their next meeting. After a hearty vote of thanks had been accorded to the chairman the meeting closed.
