SWIMMING.

The gaslight carnival to be held on Monday next, the night before the championship sculling race, promises to be a great success. Seeing that it is the first carnival held, this saason, and that a crowd of visitors will be here to witness the struggle between W. Webb and R. Tresidder for the world's championship, it is anticipated that there will be a record attendance at the carnival. The entries are excellent, 25 having entered for the maiden race, and the other events have their full share of support. In the relay race seven teams have entered, and this will be a very exciting event. Mr H. Olds will give a display of high and fancy diving, while Mr A. Muller will attempt to break the 440 yards record. The City Band will be in attendance to supply the incidental music. We assure the public that an excellent evenin's sport will be provided.
