A Scientific expedition.

AUCKLAND, December 27.

The scientific partj, fwiich will leave by the Hinemoa to-morrow for the Kermadec Islands, are busily engaged putting the finishing touches to their arrangements for a period of 12 months' research which they will carry out. The party consists of Messrs T. Iredale and C. E. Warden, of Chriatchurch, W. L. Wallace, of Timaru, W. A. B. Olliver, Christchurch; and S. R. Oliver, of Tauranga. , The investigation of the botany and geology of the islands will be undertaken oyt Messrs Olliver and Iredale and Wallace,' who will also devote their attention to zoolAfy, whilst Mr Warden, metorologifit of the expedition, will make the climatic conditions of the group his special study. In connection with the flora of the islands, attention will be givfen to the theory in regard to ocean currents and the carriage of seeds by birds, as well as to the possibilities of the islands having 1 at one time formed portion of the mainland of New Zealand.
