Wanganui Hotels ; a Correction,

TO TJIB BDITOB

Sir, — A paragraph in yestoi day's llernld •tatea that the "first license granted to the Steam Packet Hoi el wan in 1857, when it was known as the Yoik Hotel, the name being afterwards changed to the Steam Packet Hotel, and finally to the present appellation." This is not quite corlect. The original York Hotel was situated «ifc the corner ot Campbell I'Tace an<l Wickstecd Place, wheie a boai*!?"aghouse aud billiard-room now arc light opposite the Cosmopolitan Club, and it was kept by the late John Kells. Some years subsequent to 1837, the York Hotel ceased to exisl, aud Kells "shitcod his peg.i" to Taupo Quay, aud the name of the hotel was changed to the Steam Packet ; and later on it was "run" by Mr and Mrs John Davidson. Mr Davidson died, and lii» widow atterwards married Mr David (-Duncan) J-ihtir, who at that time worked the terrj across the river before the W'auganui Bridge was buik in 1871-72. Later on again the hotel came into the possession and occupation of Mr and Mrs \V. H. O. Foster — in 1885 — as correctly staled ill paragraph above quotod. — I am, etc.. JAS. GARLAND WOON, Canipliell ticet, June "I lth, 1907. The Arbitration Court orens in Wanganui to-morrow. Ills Honor Mr Justice Sim will pieside, and with him will be Memr.s S. Hi own (employers' represe»t«live), and U. Slater (employees' representative). All's well that ondtf well ' The carriers are happy, and the difle:enec.s between them and Cr llarkness have been harmoniously settled. The chimney and fireplace in the stand have liocomc an established fact, and the cairieiK vie now enabled to toast their toes on cold mornings while waiting for calls — over a lire made from a supply of coal donated by Cr liaikness 1 . A deputation, from the W'anganni River Trust, consisting -ol Messrs ii. Caiman, T. H. iWlliama. J. T. Stewail, aud J. T. Hogau, M.H.R., waited this afternoon on Messrs Strauhon and F. Simpson, Commiesionere of Crown Lands for Wellington and Taranaki respectively. Tlie deputation conferred with the Commissioners as to the leasing of the mile wide strip of land abutting on the river, which is rested in the Trust. It was agreed that the beet course to follow, if the Trust were unable to undertake tho expense of a comprehensive survey, was to make separate a survey for each section of land as it xvas applied for, leaving the general survey to he dealt with later on. The Wellington correspondent of the Vnckland Herald etat.es that rumour* of j.ll sorts have been flying about the big j buildings n«j to the intentions of the Act-ing-Premier, the Hon. Halt-Jones, when his chief returns to the colony. One or two political tipsters who have made excellent shots in the past on the Ministerial target, give out that Mr Hall-Jones' tenure of office has about rim it» course, and that a Canterbury member, who wan at one time inclined to s-tray from the Government fold, will step into the Ministerial shoes of that gentleman. Anyhow, most people appear to be agreed that the health of the Actin^-Premior is such aa to demand his curly withdrawal from the turmoil of political life. If i 8i 8 said that a AlinKtfr dropped a hiut the other day that some important changes can be expected >*»fore (he next session is far advanced.
