The object oi the anti-grazing agitation was to lone sales ot land at pranie value. Lend Denman's remark that cattle driving was not a crime ot a very oerioub natuie was severely criticised. Lord Crevve explained that Lord Denman did not intend to minimise such ciiminal disorderly acts. He merely argued that driving wa«j less serious than maiming. Loid Crewe heartily agreed. Lord Londonderry, in vindication of the law, said it ought never to be regarded ab a paity question. He admitted that .severe watchfulness wa«s necessary, und added that the Government relied on the ordinary law. Lord Itipon declared that the Government wiii determined to put into operation all the powers of the law that it possesned. The Daily Chronicle says that Lord Jk'iiman's remark wa,s not very judicious. Diiving may be used veiy cftectiyely as a means ot intimidation, and lead to aenous disorder.
