A BREAOH OF THE SANITARY BY-LAWS.

Somk lit Hi' turn asp wo drew attention t<> the delay in the demolition ol houses condemned "by tlie Health authorities. An equally aeriou-. stat? ot affairs— it' not more so has been brought under our notice in regard to sanitation. Ah our readers are aware the Borough Council is pursuing the policy of making every house connect with tho drainage, and Hub is being carried out as quickly ne it !« possible to do so. But one would expect that tlu more congested parts of the l>orouph would receive first attention, and that tho pressing of a householder in Glasgow or Dublin Street would come .if tor that upon a man who occupies premises in the heart 01 the town. In one oi" tho chief business blocks of the Av-nue, 60 we are informed, there are at least two premises where the old-fashioned and insanitary pan closet is to be found. One of these is almost underneath a workroom where a large number of girls nre employed. How it comes about that this is permitted is a mystery. Following upon the plague scare at Auckland, it was to he expected that the whole colony would enter upon a cleaning campaign, and energetic house to house inspection instituted. Such a course ought to bring to light every instance where the sanitary by-la w« are overlooked, and the offenders should provide instant remedy or face prosecution. II the present sanitary staff is inadequate to cope with the work — and it certainly has all it mm well do— then it should be increased, if only temporarily, for whatever the expeusc it is a mere bagatelle in comparison with the health of the community. We hope the Council will look into the matter, and while continuing tho drainage connections right through the borough, see to it that the thickly populated parts of the town arc attended to lirst. And at the same time, it may find a few business back yards winch want cleaning up.
