On Wednesday evening the annual meeting of the Wanganui Literary and Debating Societies' Union was held at the Christ Church Club's Rooms. Delegrates from the T. Y.M.1., . Druids, Catholic Young Men's Club, Christ Church Club, and Waverley Club were present, Mr Murphy presiding. The reports and balance-sheet showed that a great deal of interest had been taken in the debates during the past year, and the financial state of the Union was satisfactory. The following officers were elected — President, Mr J. H. Keesing; vice-Presidents, Mr C. E. Mackay (Mayor), Mr J. T .Hogan, M.H.R., Revs. J. G. Chapman and Ward and Messrs Driver, W. Empson, J. Butler, J. R. Hunt, Johnson, G. Spriggens, and Treadwell. Mr S. Kernohan was elected secretary. Mr H. Caddy was appointed auditor. Mr C. T. Maclean was accorded a vote of thanks for his services as secretary during the past year, and a motion expressing* the Union's great loss sustained through the death of the Rev T. B. Maclan, onr of the vice-Presidents, was carried.
