ROWING.

NOTES BY "RUDDER."

W.R.C. FITZHERBERT FOURS. The final heat for this ©vent was rowed last Tuesday evening in the presence of a large number of spectators. Bailey, Collier and Smith were the opposing blades, and as was generally anticipated, Bailey succeeded somewhat easily in settling the opposition. Collier rowed a good losing race, but Smith failed to row up to last week's form, and in addition, he was steered a very erratic course. From the start. Bailey jumped off in great style, followed by Smith, who soon fell back , Jiowcver, and Collier came up into second place. With half a mile gone, Bailey ha J established a three lengths load, with Collier still in second position. At the /jiile, Collier commenced to catch on Bailey, and, quickly reducing th© lead by a ler'gth, it looked as if the leaders, were not to have all their own way. But, when Bailey called on his crew, they were able to answer easily, and despite the game plugging displayed by Collier, Bailey went on and ran in a winner with two lengths clear of Collier, who in turn was about three lengths ahead of Smith. The winning crew hae undoubtedly showed superiority m all engagements, and has really never been seriously threatened in any race. I extend to them my hearty congratulations upon their splendid performances. The crew ie composed of P. Bailey (stroke), E. Not man (3), W. Curtis (2) and W. Lockett (bow). U.B.C. DUSTIN SHIELD. On Tuesday evening Cotterill defeated Davis comfortably by two lengths, after which Corby and Duetin lined up at tKe post. This race was most exciting all the way down, and it was only in the las*, few strokes that Corbv placed the isp'je beyond doubt, winning by a canvas. Dustin was quickest away, and led t/, r a short distance, but at the half-mile 'Corby had secured a half length lead, wVch at the milo post he had increased 'to a length. From here down, Duston. Tntvle a most determined attack, but • Cot by, rowing a magnificent stroke, aDd nursing hie lfght crew with good iur'.gmen't, was able to keep the opposition at bay the whole distance, and won s> splendi-dlv contested race by a canvas. rr L 'heh c final !ieat was rowed on \\ ednesday r jght between Corby and Cotterill. A rjagnificent ra«e was the result of this meeting, the excitement being intense right up till the last f<;w strokes, when C'otterill made a great effort, and hie wsw responding gamely, he had the Ba>i6f;»ction of winning the 'jrst contest for the Dnstin Challenge Shield, by ll'c narror.- imrgin. of a canvas.
