STRANGE CASE OF "WILLIAM" EDWARDS.
MELBOURNE, September 29. The announcement that the person arrested in Brisbane on a warrant issued in connection with an alleged burglary at the Studley Arms Hotel, had turned out to be a women created a great deal of astonishment in Colliugwood, where she was long known as "William" Edwards. For about nine months she was in partnership with Alexander Pollock, tind rented a stable connected with the Studley Arms Hotel in Wellington Street. She claimed to be the owner of the racing pony Tasman, and Pollock leased another, known as Rosebud. "William" Edwards broke in Tasman, and did all the training. She was very expert in handling horses, and used the lassoo with astonishing proficiency. Pollock, who was almost constantly in the company of his partner, cannot recoHcile the revelation from Brisbane that Edwards is a woman. On one occasion at the Studley Arms Gate an offensive bully was knocked down by Edwards with a blow which then would have dissipated any suspicion as to sex, if such had been entertained. The men who frequented the local hotel in Johnston Street relate that they repeatedly played cards, drank, and smoked with Edwards, who acted throughout ac a thorough man about the town. As if complexities of case were not sufficient, it has been further asserted that Diwards, who in her career as a man, came in for plenty of admiration, and had many love tokens from enamoured young girls, actually went through the ceremony of marriage in a city church with a widow.
