SHOP ASSISTANTS' HOURS.

The British and Irish Shop Assistants' Association have asked the Government to legislate in order to give local authorities compulsory powers to fi xa uniform hour of closing, a weekly half-holiday, and a workiug t week of sixty hours. Mr HerbetU Gladstone replied that it would be difficult to pass a compulsory measure, and there, was no chance of legislation on the subject at present.
